By: Kate Kennelly With the 2020 new year fresh in all of our minds, one thing comes up in almost every conversation: what are your New Year's resolutions? While millions of Americans set New Year's resolutions, most of them will never be achieved. According to the Washington Post, 50% of Americans have New Year’s resolutions that involve going to the gym. Gyms certainly tend to benefit from this because of the “New Year's Resolutions Rush.” The gyms see a huge increase in memberships purchased. Most people start going to the gym very early in the morning on January second. This is often times the busiest gym day of the year. By mid January, close to 80% of New Year's resolutions are already broken by these former gym goers. This means that people waste a ton of money on a gym pass they will not use. The gym also benefits because they make money for almost nothing. According to the exercise app Strava, 80% of the working out related resolutions are broken by January 17th. While the gyms benefit from this, fast food chains take a toll. Every January, the fast food chains are affected for all of January. Last year, fast food joints were down by 4.6% for the first month of the year. You would think that with so many resolutions being set towards being healthier, fast food restraints would suffer more. This is not true though. While they have been known to go down a little bit every January, they are right back to normal sales by February. The one fast food chain that has seemed to continuously go down is McDonalds. They certainly still are very big and are really an empire but, their revenue has gone down nearly 5% yearly since 2016. This is largely because people are sticking to their resolutions a little more than previously. One fast food chain that has increased since McDonalds has gone down is Chipotle. This is often deemed a much healthier option than eating a greasy burger and fries. So while many people quit their resolutions of losing weight with in the first few weeks, some people are still making progress. The number of gym goers may not rise very much, but people are at least making an effort to eat fast food less. How about you? Will you be sticking to your New Year's resolutions this year?
