As of late, the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is the highest grossing film franchise of all time, surpassing Harry Potter, James Bond, and even Star Wars. The franchise has had a huge influence on movies made in the 2010s, as there was an influx of superhero movies last decade. Because of the massive success of that, DC, another comic branch and considered Marvel’s rival, has taken a stab at making a movie universe. While successful, the series has been critically panned for balantanly ripping off the MCU while having none of the heart. The DCEU (DC Extended Universe) started with Man of Steel (2013). Man of Steel has a mixed reception, the same reception as Batman Vs. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. However, Suicide Squad and Justice League have had a negative reception and were hated even by DC fans. They were considered disrespectful to the original source material and were accused of rushing through the development of the plot, which it was. The Justice League movie was also a blatant ripoff of the first Avengers movie, too, and included many of the same plot beats. The only good DCEU movie is Shazam, which is actually a really funny movie. DC has been putting out quite a lot of content recently, even having its own convention in August. And three movies are coming out soon: Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad, and the extended cut of Justice League. As for all of them, I am actually a bit optimistic, considering I think DC works better with single served movies, rather than overarching storylines. The MCU was planned for over a decade and it paid off, having both financial and critical success. The sad thing is, I definitely prefer DC to Marvel, even with their recent losses compared to the latter. I love The Dark Knight, one of my favorite movies, and it’s a DC movie. I prefer it over any Marvel movie, and I hope that DC can step up their game and deliver some good movies such as the Nolan Trilogy.
