By: Natalia Peña Here at St. Anthony, we have had so many talented athletes represent our school very well. They've played and shown their work ethic is fit for the collegiate level, and these students are taking the challenge by committing themselves to the next four years to their sport. Here are some of the student athletes and the colleges they have committed to: Charlotte Burnham: “I have been rowing since 8th grade at Long Beach Junior Crew. Before rowing, I played soccer, but never truly loved a sport until I joined rowing. Rowing has been the greatest part of my high school experience and where I have found myself and my closest friends. I am so glad I had the opportunity to compete for my club, and help make an impact on my club and the sport. I have committed to rowing for Stanford University. When learning about the school’s values and team, I could already tell it was fit. After visiting campus however, I knew there was no other school I wanted to go to. I am beyond excited to represent Stanford for the next four years.” Destiny Avila: “I started playing t-Ball at four years old, which led me to start playing softball at age eight. My freshman year, I joined a travel ball team, which made me work a lot harder to get to the level of my other teammates. I would say my first two years in SA varsity softball shaped me into the athlete I am today because I played with older girls than what I used to, which ultimately made me more competitive in the sport. I committed to Medaille University in Buffalo, New York. I chose this school because the teammates were extremely welcoming, and I realized I had a lot in common with the team as well. The college also has a really good program in what I want to major in and that was super important to me when picking a school.” Jaayden Bush: “I’ve been playing basketball since I was five-years old, and I started playing organized basketball when I was eight-years old. I’ve also played on varsity all four years of high school. Being the youngest player on the team and being the only freshman on varsity at the time was difficult, but gaining encouragement from my upperclassman teammates kept me going. I’ve also been captain since my junior year of high school, which was a big accomplishment and responsibility. I was grateful to announce my commitment in the winter at Dominican University in San Rafael, California. I knew this university was the right place for me because the coaches believed in me, and I can see myself growing at this university not only as an athlete but as a person.” Rose Cano: “I’ve been playing softball since I was seven-years old, And I taught myself how to pitch when I was nine-years old. I’ve been a part of a travel ball organization since I was eleven-years old, and I owe all of my progress to them. I also have been on the SA varsity softball team for four years, and I was selected as captain for the past two years, which meant a lot because I know that my hard work these past years didn’t go unnoticed. I chose to commit to George Washington University in Washington, DC because the coach took me in as her own, and the players on the team had welcomed me enough to make me feel as if I was already one of them.” Jude Jackson: "I’ve been playing baseball since I was six-years old, I started playing for St. Hedwig little league from age six to eleven. Freshman and sophomore year I was on JV as well as being on a travel ball team, and when sophomore year ended, the travel ball team made me a stronger athlete and helped me advance to a level I knew I could play at. I was given the opportunity to play baseball and continue my education at Baruch College in New York City. I knew I wanted to commit to Baruch College because it was accommodating to what I was looking for. The field is located on Coney Island, and the team had previously won CUNYAC championship, and the success of the team made me feel like I can grow athletically at this school.” Aimee Metz: “I’ve been playing softball since I was seven-years old. I began playing because my love for baseball grew at age four. I’m a four-year varsity softball athlete at SA and have been starting catcher every year. This year I was selected as one of the varsity captains, which was special to me because I enjoy my role as a leader and guiding the underclassmen. I’m excited to say I’m committed to play D1 softball at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. My goal was to find a college with good academics and a good softball program, so I knew BU was the right fit for me because it fit the criteria that I was looking for. “ Congratulations to all the athletes on their athletic accomplishments and good luck in the future! - The Halo.
