The Opening of the Brand New Athletic Complex and How are the Saints doing so far this season?9/8/2023 by Natalie Dueñas & Jackie Smith![]() The St. Anthony High School football team played Jefferson High School on August 18th, 2023 at their newly renovated athletic complex on Clark Avenue. Fans, students, alumni, and staff gathered to cheer on their St. Anthony football team on to victory. The Saints debuted their new field with a victory against Jefferson with a final score of 55-0. The Saints scored early and made the score 40-0 by halftime. The Saints ended the game with an impressive score of 55-0. The following game, against West Torrance which was an away game, was another victory for the Saints. The ending score of the game came out to 62-29. With only two games into the season, the Saints have put on quite a show. The Saints have now put up 117 points in two games. This is a huge improvement because last season they only put up 126 points all season. With exciting and promising games afoot, the Saints have high spirits for the remainder of the season. This was a huge victory for the Saints as it was their first home game back at their home field since Spring of 2021. They had been using other schools facilities to host their home games for the past two and a half years but this game was a huge game changer for the whole Saints community. St. Anthony High School has been planning and working to remodel Clark Field for a long time now. For the last year, they had been working on it and they opened their brand new Athletic Complex over the summer. And now it is finally in use right in time for football season. Because the wait for this field has been long awaited, let’s see what our Saints students are most excited about for the future of this field. Student Interviews: Naveed Tate: “I’m most excited to play home games on the new field because last year we only played away games and playing at home means a lot to me.” Miranda Cassidy: “I'm excited to finally be able to play on grass. And to not twist my ankles in potholes or get rocks in my cleats.” Reyna DeBolt: “I’m most excited to be able to cheer and perform halftimes at the football games.” Clark Field is such a beautiful and vital place for our Saints. Sports bring our community together. As a senior, I’ve been waiting for this remodel for the past 3 years, and I feel incredibly blessed that I get to see and be on the field as a student and athlete. As a whole community, we are all so excited and grateful to have this field. I can’t wait to witness and hear about all of the wins and losses on this field to come. This is only the beginning and has a whole future ahead. Welcome back Clark Field! By Tyler Cazares Shortly after the Saints lost in the CIF Quarter Finals, they began a summer league. The teams this year are ranked much higher than usual and are all around Division 1. The Saints will be facing schools such as Millikan, Wilson, Downey, and plenty of other great schools. Some of the players coming up to Varsity this year will make a big difference as they have improved drastically over time. So far the Saints have played Millikan and Downey twice. They are both promising teams that the Saints had to fight long and hard to have a chance against.
St. Anthony baseball could have a great summer league if everyone plays their hardest and gives it their all. They ended their spring season with a 69% win rate and are hoping to do even better this summer. I know that the boys will have a fun filled summer while still working hard and getting ready for next season By Tyler Cazares The Saints baseball team kicked off their CIF Playoffs season May 5 with a 20-3 win against Schurr. Schurr High School was a good team that the Saints beat and the Saints were looking to do it again against JW North. The playoffs are single elimination; so, the Saints moved on to Round 2 against JW North and Schurr was out. In the next game, the Saints baseball game took place in Riverside against JW North on Tuesday, May 9. In this game, the Saints started sophomore pitcher Benny Lane and senior Tyler Harris closed out the game. Pitchers Jake Searles and Tyler Cazares remained on call in case the pitchers needed some help. They could technically throw any of the pitchers they wanted since they had had plenty of time to rest in between games, but Lane and Harris were carefully chosen to pitch against this specific team. JW North had a promising team, and it wasn’t going to be easy to beat them. The Saints had to hit them hard and play as a team in order to win 10-2. Friday, May 12, the Saints took on Shadow Hills at home in the CIF-SS Quarter Finals. It was a rough game from the start and Shadow Hills quickly took the lead. The Saints were having a really hard time connecting with the ball and started falling behind. There was always a possibility that St. Anthony could come back and take the game for themselves, but unfortunately that did not happen. The Saints ended the game with a 10-4 loss and were eliminated in the quarter finals. The Shadow Hills game was a very emotional game for everyone, and this would sadly mean some players would be hanging up their jerseys for good. Overall, the Saints had a great season and got to the quarterfinals for the first time in 5 years. The St. Anthony's baseball team has every reason to be proud and hold their heads high as they gave it their all. Now it’s almost time to say goodbye to the seniors as they further their athletic and academic careers. This was the best year the Saints had performed in a long time. Although at first it seemed like a devastating loss, all this does is make us stronger and more prepared for the next year of playoffs.
The baseball season for the Saint Anthony Saints has been one of the best in years. The saints are second in the league with 10 wins and 2 losses and headed to the CIF-SS Playoffs. The Saints baseball team has proven to be efficient in all aspects of the game, and even the JV team is doing great. The Saints have some of the best stats in the whole league with the highest batting average, second and fourth lowest earned run average, and other top performers. The Saint Anthony coaches also have had a big impact on the games so far. Although there are no top leaders in coaching, I believe that our coaches would be on the top for their strategy and awareness during the ballgame.
With playoffs starting this week, the Saints have a good chance of placing very high. Their team this year looks very promising and could take the #1 spot in the playoffs if they play their best. By Alexander Cobbs If you are a student of Saint Anthony’s you have definitely heard the last name Lolesio-Pua at least once around school. They are a popular family around Saint Anthonys well known for their talent in sports. From competing on the football field, to scoring points in volleyball, the Lolesio-Puas have been making their mark as Saint Anthony athletics. But the sport they are dominant the most in is none other than rugby. That’s right, if you thought they were dangerous tackling with pads on, just wait till you see them tackling without them.
This year, the Lolesio-Puas have led both the boys and girls rugby teams to successful seasons with the boys even being the runner-ups for the rugby championship. What makes it even more impressive is they are all not even seniors and will return to Saint Anthony’s next year as well. But this year is very exciting for the family as they have been selected to compete in the Austria games for Belmont Shore Rugby in June. Jasiah Lolesio-Pua is a sophomore here at Saint Anthony High School. He is most popular for his amazing tackling ability at his size. He may not be the biggest in the family, but he can slam athletes even twice his size on their backs like it is no problem at all. Nila Lolesio-Pua is only a freshman at SA, but she is no different from Jasiah when it comes to how dominant she is in Rugby. When she is on the field, all the other girls better watch out because Nila can tackle just like her brothers. Last but not least is the oldest sibling , Elijah Lolesio-Pua. He is an absolute unit on the Rugby field. Not only is he the leader of the Saint Anthony Team and one of the main scorers, but he also is the kicker. That’s right Elijah does everything and is the perfect role model for his younger siblings. Elijah is unable to compete with his siblings in Austria as he is too old for the competition, as a very successful player here at Saint Anthony’s there was no way not to include him in the family’s upcoming success. Austria better look out, because the Lolesio-Puas are coming, and they are coming to win! By: Victoria Valenzuela Throughout the school, we have tons of girls who thrive in their sport. I’ve taken the time to interview just a few of them with the same questions to get their personal perspective and thoughts on what they do. Golf I myself have been part of the varsity girls golf team for two years now and I started playing when I was four years old. Three of my biggest accomplishments include recently becoming the Long Beach Junior Crosby Winner, ranking 2nd in the West Coast for Drive Chip and Putt, and becoming St. Anthony’s Girls Golf first ever individual Del Rey League Champion and Del Rey League MVP. St. Anthony’s athletic program has given me an opportunity to reach goals and accomplish things I wouldn’t be able to do without being here– heading into junior year it has set me forth for college golf and endless opportunities to come my way. Many other female athletes here at SA feel the same way. Soccer I interviewed Isabella Cruz who plays center defensive and attacking mid. How old were you when you started playing and who is your biggest inspiration? “I started playing soccer when I was four years old and I have to say my biggest inspiration was my dad.” What are some of your biggest accomplishments in your sport? “Some of my biggest accomplishments in my sport is being able to compete in ECNL which is the best league in the world for my age. I think being able to be on one of the top teams in the country and continuing to be on the honor roll will be my biggest challenge and accomplishment.” Where do you see yourself in the future for your sport? In the future, I see myself being committed to playing soccer in college. Basketball I also interviewed sophomore Anaya Tunu. How old were you when you started playing? “In the future, I see myself being committed to playing soccer in college.” What are some of your biggest accomplishments in your sport? “Some of my biggest accomplishments in my sport are making varsity and being a starter my freshman year.” Where do you see yourself in the future for your sport? “I’m not sure where I see myself in the future playing basketball. I’ll definitely finish out my high school career, but I'm not sure what will happen after.” Track and Field Lastly, I interviewed track star, Christine Adams. How old were you when you started playing and who is your biggest inspiration? “I started running track when I was six years old and did it for a few years as a kid. I eventually found my way back to it when I got to St. Anthony. My biggest inspiration through the years has been my dad. He always led by example and was there to push me when I was ready to commit to it.” What are some of your biggest accomplishments in your sport? “I don’t have one big accomplishment that sticks out to me, but I feel accomplished in my sport when I just show up every day and get past those moments of discouragement.” Where do you see yourself in the future for your sport? “I don’t have any set plans for continuing track and field past high school but running will always be a part of my lifestyle." These are just a few amazing athletes I was able to get an insider view on. St. Anthony provides opportunities to grow and to pursue your sport which I think shows in these interviews as well.

The boys baseball team is finally finishing their Winter Season and moving on to Spring Season–the main event. This is where the game gets more serious and competitive for the Saints! After the last season when us Saints moved up a division, we are facing much better teams. Some of these teams are Mary Star, Cathedral, Bishop Montgomery, and many others. With new and better competition, it’s time for the Saints baseball team to step up. If we can do that, I’m sure we stand a good chance against these teams. By Manuel Villa and Jake Swan With the season of spring arriving soon, Boys Golf has begun. St. Anthony’s golf program has been very successful in its past golf seasons and looks to continue that success this year. They are under new coach Joey Luyben, who is very hopeful for the new season saying… Joey Luyben: “Looking forward to the 2023 golf season we got a great group of guys and a lot of talent. We've been blessed with a great golf program here at St. Anthony.” This year our golf team features seniors Gavin Lane, Tyler Segar, and Jacob Harrison. Both players have been a vital part of our team the past couple of years and will now play an even bigger role as the teams oldest and most experienced players. Along with the seniors, juniors Blake Andrews, Connor Barrett, Ethan Schwitzenberg, and Manny Villa will complete the team. All these golfers will play key parts in St. Anthony’s success. We have interviewed the team's most experienced players Gavin Lane and Ethan Schwitzenberg, Jacob Harison, Blake Andrews, Connor Barrett, and Tyler Segar, and asked them “What are you hoping to accomplish during this season?” Gavin Lane: “I want to consistently stay under 40.” Ethan Schwichtenberg: “Go to state and have some fun with my boys.” Jacob Harrison: “I hope to stay undefeated.” Blake Andrews: “I hope to shoot some of my best rounds, and keep an undefeated season, and win league.” Connor Barrett: “I want to come closer as a team and stay undefeated.” Tyler Segar: “Get better and get closer with the guys.” St. Anthony will have to travel though being in the Camino Real league with 6 other teams. They will be playing against teams such as Bishop Montgomery, Salesian, and Mary Star of the Sea. Looking at the team and its players this season is sure to be a good one. About Lakewood Country Club

It features an 18-hole 7,033 total yard championship course with multiple sand bunkers and beautiful scenery. In the year 2005 and 2020 it was voted Los Angeles County Course of the Year. This beautiful course will be the location of all the St. Anthony golf team’s home games. By Alexander Cobbs One of the most recognized teams in the history of Saint Anthony sports is the boys basketball team. They are known for their consistent success, talented athletes, and amazing coaching staff. Over the years, they managed to capture a whopping 25 league championships and even a state title in 2000. If you ever see the team after school, you will most likely catch them in the Errion Gym practicing for their next opponent. But it isn’t always business for the Hoopers. Let’s take a look at what happens behind the scenes for the boys basketball team here at Saint Anthony. When it is not time for their practice, the Hooper Saints spend a lot of time in what they call the “Team Room” inside the Team Room is a comfortable lounge where the players can relax and have fun while they wait for either practice or their games. When the coaches arrive in the room, they show the players footage of previous games of their opponents and the players study them before taking action on the court. The Basketball Team spends a lot of time together on and off the floor. When they aren’t hooping they are either hanging out together or going out to eat. Here at Saint Anthony, the coaches and players establish a brotherhood amongst the team and make sure that they are always bonded together, which makes the chemistry of the team very healthy.
After beating their opponent or handling their business at practice, the Saints go home and take care of their schoolwork to make sure that they are never behind in the classroom. The coaching staff reinforces this by having occasional grade checks at lunchtime. This helps with the success of the players by helping them not only become great athletes, but also exceptional young men. It is safe to say that there’s a lot more to the Boys Basketball Team than other students may think. |
