By Tyler Cazares The Saints baseball team kicked off their CIF Playoffs season May 5 with a 20-3 win against Schurr. Schurr High School was a good team that the Saints beat and the Saints were looking to do it again against JW North. The playoffs are single elimination; so, the Saints moved on to Round 2 against JW North and Schurr was out. In the next game, the Saints baseball game took place in Riverside against JW North on Tuesday, May 9. In this game, the Saints started sophomore pitcher Benny Lane and senior Tyler Harris closed out the game. Pitchers Jake Searles and Tyler Cazares remained on call in case the pitchers needed some help. They could technically throw any of the pitchers they wanted since they had had plenty of time to rest in between games, but Lane and Harris were carefully chosen to pitch against this specific team. JW North had a promising team, and it wasn’t going to be easy to beat them. The Saints had to hit them hard and play as a team in order to win 10-2. Friday, May 12, the Saints took on Shadow Hills at home in the CIF-SS Quarter Finals. It was a rough game from the start and Shadow Hills quickly took the lead. The Saints were having a really hard time connecting with the ball and started falling behind. There was always a possibility that St. Anthony could come back and take the game for themselves, but unfortunately that did not happen. The Saints ended the game with a 10-4 loss and were eliminated in the quarter finals. The Shadow Hills game was a very emotional game for everyone, and this would sadly mean some players would be hanging up their jerseys for good. Overall, the Saints had a great season and got to the quarterfinals for the first time in 5 years. The St. Anthony's baseball team has every reason to be proud and hold their heads high as they gave it their all. Now it’s almost time to say goodbye to the seniors as they further their athletic and academic careers. This was the best year the Saints had performed in a long time. Although at first it seemed like a devastating loss, all this does is make us stronger and more prepared for the next year of playoffs.
