By: Brianna Quinonez Being fluent in multiple languages can open many doors for the dedicated speaker. It can range from advancement in their careers to simply helping another person who is in need of a translator. Translators help the world go round—especially when the person in need of linguistic help speaks a language few in the world can understand. It is well known that many people from around the world, and especially in Latin America, risk their lives daily so that they can achieve their dream of spending their lives in the United States of America. Those who wish to enter illegally, or in a non-approved way, are detained in immigration centers with lawyers that are most commonly fluent in English and Spanish. For those who speak indigenous languages, help must be derived from the origins of those languages themselves, like Guatemala. According to BBC, Ericka Guadalupe Vásquez Flores is a translator that assists lawyers in the United States so that they can understand what the immigrants are trying to say. A group of translators quickly sprung up for those who were detained for months since they couldn’t even communicate basic statements or requests. Some of the most common indigenous languages dealt with in the detention centers are Mam & Quiché—those of which are derived from the Mayan language. According to Ominigolot, the two languages are spoken by Guatemalans in the highlands, but range up to 890,000 speakers in the world which are all based in the region. According to Mayan Families, indigenous people from Guatemala are discriminated against when it comes to their work life and yearly income as they are “making on average about half of what non-indigenous workers earn.” With this said, it’s no wonder why many risk it all to come to a country where all cultures and shades of skin work under the same sun with equal opportunity for success. While there is no definite answer as to how to deal with the overflowing of the detention centers with people eager to reach American soil, it can definitely be said that a bond is created when the voice of someone in need of help is finally heard and understood.

![]() Photo: BBC By: Inez Jaime On April 2, 2020 the country Pakistan overturned a death sentence about a British- born man named Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh who was convicted of murder of U.S journalist Daniel Pear. According to BBC reporters, his sentence had been reduced. According to BBC, there had been three other men that were included in the murder of the journalist. They were given life sentences for the murder of the journalist. However, they were released later by the Sindh High Court. The chief prosecutor of the high court had stated that he will lodge an appeal and that Sheikh is going to remain in jail until the appeal is set and ready to be heard by the Supreme Court. The defense lawyer is expecting his client to be released in a few days. Now people have wondered, what happened to Daniel Pearl? Well, according to BBC, Daniel was known for working for Wall Street Journal, but had gone missing in January of 2002. He was looking for research on “Ismilant activity” between two men who tried to blow up a plane by using bombs that they hid in their shoes. During the trial, the prosecutors stated that Sheikh had lured Pearl into a meeting with an “Islamic cleric”. Overtime they had built a friendship, and were able to discuss problems relating to their wives, who had both been pregnant at the time. A month later, a video was filmed of Daniel Pearl being executed. After the video had been filmed, it was sent to a U.S consulate in Karachi. Sheikh was later convicted of Pearl’s murder on July 2 by a terrosim court, and was sentenced to death row. (He had been on death row ever since 2002). Photo: Daily Mail
By: Brianna Quinonez It’s often said that the love between a mother and a child is inseparable and difficult to explain. That saying is especially true when it comes to Maria Consuelo Loera, the mother of well known Mexican cartel drug lord Joaquin Guzman, otherwise known as “El Chapo”. While that may not be seen as abnormal, many Mexican citizens and reporters have come to question why she had not only sent a letter to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the President Of Mexico, but why he personally came out to shake hands with the woman who was there to ask a favor—or a miracle. It is well known that not many Mexican citizens generally like the President and with this visit from the mother of an infamous man that many continue to think of this as suspicious and as an upcoming scandal. According to Reuters, when asked about what the letter from Loera contained, the President commented that he and his administration had nothing to hide and would publish the letter soon so that no conspiracy theories are made up in his name. Joaquin Guzman, or “El Chapo” was notorious for not only selling but shipping drugs around the world. The Sinaloa Cartel, his drug empire, was based in Sinaloa, a state in Mexico. Guzman is known to have been responsible for thousands of deaths including other gang rivals, cartel members, and innocent citizens. He also gained headlines when he escaped from Mexican prisons twice. According to Insight Crime, after being arrested for the third time, he was tried and handed over to the United States Government. From there he was sentenced to life in prison. Guzman is currently living out his sentence at the United States Penitentiary, a Supermax prison, in Colorado. According to Aljazeera, Loera came out to ask for help from the President. What she was looking for was permission to visit the United States so that she could have a meet and greet with her son. The Mexican President states that the specific favor was entirely on how the United States wanted to handle it. Whether or not Loera will be allowed to visit, neither side is going to be able to agree on a decision that pleases everyone. |
