By: Leslie Lopez According to Good Morning America Anika Chebrolu, a 14 year old, has found a possible treatment for COVID-19. Anika is in eighth grade and is from Frisco, Texas. The young adult originally did her research on ways to fight the flu then soon in the summer she changed it to coronavirus. Miss Chebrolu won the 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge with her research. Anikia made the top 10 finalists in the Young Scientist Challenge. While doing her research she got some help from her mentor from 3M, Ali. Her research included her to do close analysis of around 700 million compounds. Ali, her mentor, is surprised by Anikia’s maturity and her level of comprehension at her current age. Through Anikia’s close analysis she had found a molecule that can selectively bind to the spike protein of COVID-19. Her mentor believes that Anikia’s discovery can lead to a potential drug to help contain the virus. What Anikia is doing is closing the door for the virus so it would not be able to get attached to a human cell and then it will prevent it from multiplying. Anikia devoted her evenings, weekends, and as well as her summer to further her research. Besides winning the Young Scientist Challenge she also won $25,000. Anikia plans to continue her research by contacting drug development specialists and virologists; she also plans on using part of the money she won for the research. Anika also plans on giving part of her money to a non-profit organization, AcademyAid, the program helps underrepresented students get a good education. Anikia aspires to be a medical researcher and her advice to other young adults is to "just go for it and to never stop asking questions." Katelyn Evans, a high school junior, has been juggling her classwork and extracurricular activities while being part of a group to make sure the vaccine for COVID-19 is safe for kids. Katelyn is one of the 100 young adults that are part of a trial for Pfzier’s COVID-19 vaccine at the children’s hospital in Cincinnati. Pfizer has announced that early analysis is showing 90% effectiveness for the virus. Katelyn and her whole family signed up to be part of the trial but only Katelyn was selected. Abhinav, another young adult in the trial, decided to be part of the research after his father partook in the adult trial. His father said that he felt safe with his son enrolling in the trial to hopefully protect them both and help others. Young adults who participate in the trial go through two shots over the course of six hospital visits. Some participants get the placebo shot and others get the vaccine.

According to Daily Mail, allies that took place in the nation’s capital over the weekend sparked violence and according to the police chief it brought out “the worst” of the country. Peter Newsham, Washington D.C. chief of police, talked about how the worst part of the whole ordeal was seeing the country breakout in physical disputes over an election. According to Fox News he stated that, “we attribute that to other countries across the world, but you don’t see that here in the United States.” There were a total of eight firearms that were confiscated, seven of them were handguns while the last one was described as being in between a rifle and a unique weapon. It was uncertain if there were any casualties but it was reported that two police officers were injured and a man around 20 years of age was in critical condition after being stabbed in the back. This whole altercation appears to have been started from Trump’s Million MAGA March being confronted by BLM protesters and Antifa. Around 6pm on Sunday Anti-Trump protestors were seen throwing bottles and fireworks towards Trump supporters dining outside of a restaurant while chanting “people are dying while you are dining”, the Trump supporters were eventually forced to flee inside. 20 people were arrested as of Saturday night, ranging from assault charges to weapon possession, the whole situation appeared to die down after cops were able to successfully separate the two groups. By: Leslie Lopez According to BBC News seven people were offering negative COVID-19 test certificates to others at Paris airport of Charles de Gaulle. The perpetrators were found with more than 200 false certificates on their phones. Prosecutors say that they could have been sold for 300 euros ($356). Their arrest happened after a passengers certificate for Ethiopia was found to be counterfeit. The certificates included names of real Parsian medical laboratories. The seven face charges for forgery and complexity in fraud, which comes with a maximum fine of €375,000 ($445,287) and five years in prison. As of last week France set a new national lockdown to lower the number of people inside hospitals and because one Europe COVID cases are rising. The country has recorded more than 39,000 deaths and over 1.6 million cases. France has entered their second lockdown on October 31s, while Germany is in partial lockdown as of November 2nd. In France if you are only allowed out of your home if you can not do work from home, buy basic home goods, exercise for an hour, and to seek medical attention. Schools and daycares remain open but restaurants and bars are closed. Those rules will remain until December 1st or until further notice.
Germany has closed theaters, gyms, bars, and restaurants except takeout. Large events are not permitted and social contact is limited to two households with a limit of ten people. Overnight stays are not allowed at hotels and traveling is not encouraged. Things that are allied are protests, church services, shops and hairdressers are allowed to stay open with specific requirements. Sweden did not go on a lockdown but people volunteered to social distance and work at home, if possible. Numbers of cases have risen but not as bad as other parts of Europe. More strict guidelines have been placed in eight out of twenty-one regions in Sweden. Masks are not required but there is a limit of occupancy. ![]() By: Lucas Drummond According to ABC News, on Friday the Labor Department reported that last month employers added 638,000 jobs and that the unemployment rate had fallen to 6.9%. Before the pandemic and the COVID-19 outbreak the unemployment was at the lowest it’s been for decades, at 3.5%. The 638,000 jobs came from construction jobs which added 84,000 jobs, retail trade which added 104,000 jobs, hospitality and leisure which added 271,000 jobs, and professional and business services added 208,000 jobs. However there was a decrease in government employment last month which resulted in a loss of 268,000 jobs but according to the DOL many of these jobs were temporary Census workers. This is a good start however for the resumption of the economy from the setbacks caused by the coronavirus but it’s not enough as the U.S. has hit an all time high of over 100,000 new cases in a single day. Also on top of this according to Elise Gould, who is a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, said that the increased jobs in the last month can be misleading as we must also look at all the jobs we have lost in the past month, which were 22 million jobs in March and April. When broken down by race and gender men have an unemployment of 6.7% and women have 6.5% with white workers having unemployment of 6%, Hispanic workers having 8.8%, Asians having 7.6% and Black workers having 10.8%. There is still a need for economic help throughout the country as there is a struggle for lawmakers to make a decision on whether or not to issue a second federal stimulus and the nation's concerns at the moment are on the elections. According to Fox News, Hurricane Zeta first hit Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula as a category 1 hurricane with 80 mph winds on Monday night. Now it is moving on up to Louisiana while steadily getting stronger and is expected to become a category 2 before it hits with winds of 90 mph that can reach up to 150 mph, its moving at a rate of 18 mph and is heading north. Zeta is producing heavy rains ahead of the storm with 2 to 4 inches of rain that in some places can get up to 6 inches. The rain and damaging winds will spread inland affecting portions of Alabama, northern Georgia, and southeastern Mississippi and will even have some snow on the backside of the storm in the Northeast. Louisiana has already been hit with two tropical storms and two hurricanes previously in the year with hurricane Zeta being the fifth in the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. Hurricane Laura, which struck in August, was blamed for the deaths of 27 people in Louisiana. As well as Delta, which hit only weeks after Laura, did more damage than Laura did in the same area. Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, asked President Trump to declare an emergency before the storm hit ,which he declared on Tuesday, as well as Mayor Andrew Gilich and Alabama Governor Kay Ivey both declaring emergencies. In Grand Isle a mandatory evacuation order was issued and in New Orleans the state has sheltered about 3600 evacuees in area hotels. By: Leslie Lopez According to Newsweek, women are dressing in “Handmaid's Tale” cloaks and going to government offices to protest. They have done a silent demonstration protest on the steps of courthouses in Madison, Boston, Florida, and Little Rock. The women are protesting about Amy Barrett’s Supreme Court nomination. They are demanding justice for Ruth Ginsberg since it was her wish for her spot to be replaced after the presidential election, according to Ms.Magazine. Instead of her wish being fulfilled, republican senators rushed to nominate Amy Barrett to fill Ruth’s spot. On October 25th activists walked around 100 cities while dressed in black and red robes. Those dressed in black are portraying Ruth Ginsberg and the ones in red are portraying the hanmaids from the dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood.
Jessie Steiger is the founding member of the Boston Red Cloaks. The Boston Red Cloaks want equal rights for all women, especially body autonomy. Amy Coney Barrett was elected by Donald Trump and she was confirmed to the senate on October 26th. |
