According to CNN, On Friday in Oldsmar, Florida a hacker was able to successfully gain access into the city’s water treatment system and tried to increase the levels of sodium hydroxide which is also known as lye. An operator on Friday had noticed the hacker and watched as he accessed the system remotely adjusting the level of sodium hydroxide to more than 100 times the normal level is. But luckily the operator was able to immediately reduce the level back so that there was no significant effect on the city’s supply and nobody was harmed. Even if the operator wasn’t able to immediately stop the attack it would still take 24-36 hours for the poisoned water to reach the system and on top of that there are multiple safe alarms that go off to notify if the levels go too high. The city said that they will take more steps to insure and prevent any further access into the system. Some of the systems of sodium hydroxide are difficulty breathing, lung inflammation, severe abdominal pain, throat swelling, low blood pressure, burning of the esophagus and stomach, and as well as vision loss all according to the University of Florida health system. The long term effects of the poisoning depends on how fast the poison is able to be diluted or neutralized in the system, and also death can occur even a month later. The city has a population of about 15,000 people and is located about 17 miles west of Tampa.
