By James Swanner Recently, sunspots have been popping up, and this is not good news for humans. Sunspots can cause all sorts of terrible things for people. For example, sunspots cause solar flares and those solar flares cause disruptions in radio transmissions and power grids. Solar flares also can increase the chances of people getting epileptic seizures, cardiac arrhythmia, blood pressure increases, blood flow alterations, and cardiovascular disease. These solar flares can be very annoying for both people on Earth, astronauts, and satellites. This disruption is very aggravating for the people who run and work the satellites because it interrupts the communication and videos that are coming from space.
Sunspots don’t just affect the communication and power grids on earth, they also affect the weather. Sunspots change the weather by 0.05 to 0.1 C when at their peak cycle. This may be small, but it still changes how the earth’s weather is formed. Sunspots have been occurring more often and there are currently many sunspots on the sun as of late April 4th. The worst part about solar flares is that there is nothing we can do about them because they are just a natural part of the sun and will continue to happen for a long time.

By Noah Buchanan Brittney Griner, a WNBA basketball star who was detained for nearly 10 months in Russia last year, said America must do “everything in our power” to free the Wall Street Journal reporter who is being kept in Moscow for accusation of espionage. The journalist is Evan Gershkovich, who was reporting in Yekaterinburg when he was detained March 29th on charges that the Biden Administration has called “ridiculous”. Gershkovich, the American son of Soviet immigrants, joined the Wall Street Journal's staff last year, but has lived in Moscow since 2017, working for various news outlets. Griner and her wife posted on Instagram saying, “hearts are filled with great concern for Evan Gershkovich and his family.”
Biden urged Russia to release Gershkovich on Friday. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the “targeting of American citizens by the Russian government is unacceptable,” and condemned his detention “in the strongest terms.” Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to release Gershkovich immediately and expressed “grave concern” over his detention in a rare phone call between the two diplomats, the State Department said on Sunday. Blinken also sought the immediate release of Paul Whelan, an American who’s been detained in Russia since December 2018 on espionage charges that the U.S. says are baseless. Lavrov asked Blinken to “respect the decisions of the Russian Authorities” who say Gershkovich “was caught red-handed,” according to the summary of the call from Russia’s foreign ministry. Many reporters have been caught for espionage and are being detained. The question being asked here is, should they be released? Brittney Griner wants these reporters to be unreleased but because of Russian law they can’t. Is it okay for these reporters to be detained even though they are found guilty for the charges? Since the end of World War II, the American dollar has been used worldwide as the currency for international exchanges. This makes it difficult for other countries to grow their own currencies and their overall economy. 60 percent of foreign exchange reserves are made up of the dollar, and 90% of all transactions involve the dollar. However, in the last 20 years, the dollar has lost over 12 percent of its market share globally; this is the lowest it’s been since 1994. Since embargoes and other restrictions have been placed on foreign countries like China and Russia, these countries have attempted to stray from the dollar and expand their own currencies. This is why the dollar’s market share has gone down so much. Recently even more countries like India, the UAE, Brazil, and Argentina, are planning on dropping the dollar, as well, in efforts to distance themselves from it. If countries continue to ditch the use of the dollar, it could create issues for the United States. Issues include inflation, because there will be an increase in dollars coming into the US making its value go down. It is imperative that countries take into account the damage it could cause to our economy if all of them drop the dollar. However, this is unlikely because so many other countries rely on the dollar, and it would take a long time for all of them to get rid of it. It is always celebrated on the last Wednesday of April.
History It started when a female Italian student was assaulted in 1992 by her driving instructor, who supposedly ripped off her pants. The girl sued him against assault to the Italian Supreme Court. The Italian Supreme Court overturned the case because one of the members claimed that since the student was wearing tight jeans, she would have had to help the attacker to get the jeans off. This was called the “jeans alibi.” Women in the Italian Parliament protested the Supreme Court’s decision by wearing denim/jeans on the steps of the parliament. This observation is celebrated to support people who are victims of assault. Best Denim to Wear for this observation?
By Jake Swan Do you like hot chocolate? On March 24th a Pennsylvania chocolate factory, R.M. Palmer Co, erupted in an explosion. This explosion killed 7 people, but one lucky survivor has a far-fetched story about how she escaped the flames. Patricia Borges, one of the surviving workers inside the factory at the time of the explosion, says that falling into a vat of liquid chocolate saved her life. After the explosion, Patricia Borges caught on fire and thought that this would be the end to her life, when suddenly the floor beneath her collapsed and she fell into the vat. The liquid chocolate helped extinguish the flames and cushion her fall. She was left there for 9 hours before she was found through the rubble of what once was a building. Patricia Borges injuries consisted of burns, two broken heels, and a broken collar bone. Borges and her coworkers reported at 4:30 PM they had smelled a strong gas odor and were asking supervisors if they were going to be evacuated or not. 30 minutes later, Patricia Borges was thrown from a ladder and while trying to run away fell into the liquid chocolate vat. Borges now seeks accountability from the 75-year family run company in hopes to prevent this from happening in the future. Overall, Borges hopes to seek justice for her coworkers and colleagues, one of which being Judy, a friend of hers at the factory. The factory owners have yet to comment on the worker’s claims as this event settles down as one of the craziest stories yet.
So I ask again: delicious hot drink or life saving liquid? By Diego Campbell Who turned out the lights? If you’ve been keeping tabs on the land down under, on Thursday, April 20, the moon made its way over to the sun and brought most of Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia into the dark side. A beautiful solar eclipse played out over the skies, impressing everyone whose black light it touched. However, eclipses pass by so rarely that people don’t understand them or give them the thought they deserve. So I won’t just explain how eclipses happen: I’ll also tell you how rare this one was and why the special glasses were a must for any sun watchers that day. The Eclipse There are many types of eclipses that can cast a shadow over the Earth's surface. In most cases, the moon orbits the Earth to the point that it’ll cross in front of the sun, blotting out a part of it and its light in the areas the moon is over. It’ll be as if the day turned into night with the flick of a switch. The one we got on April 20th was a hybrid solar eclipse. A hybrid solar eclipse occurs because the Earth is curved, and the State of the eclipse can shift in different regions from an annular eclipse to a total eclipse (blocking most of the sun to staying in the direct center of it). The Chances Of course, the moon doesn’t follow the same orbit plan the Earth has with the sun. When the moon does have the right alignment to cause an eclipse, it’s a rare event. However, scientists have determined that there are eclipse seasons in spring and fall where eclipses are likely to occur, but rarity among specific eclipses varies. Hybrid Eclipses appear about once every decade, and may make up about 3% of all eclipses this century. The Risk
Solar Eclipses may take place in space, but that doesn’t mean they can’t touch us. Aside for a brief period of time during a total eclipse, you should never look directly at the sun in a solar eclipse without eye protection. If you did, it could cause eclipse blindness, otherwise known as solar retinopathy. It destroys cells in the back of your eye and can cause temporary to permanent damage. The best way to prevent this besides staring at the ground all day is to use special solar eclipse glasses. They may look like cardboard cutouts, but they will get the job done. Conclusion If you happen to be in America, Europe, or anywhere in the world that is not around Australia, then you weren’t able to see the eclipse. Like kangaroos and the preschooler TV show Bluey, this eclipse was a wonder belonging to the Land Down Under. I wanted to address it because of how rare it was. It’s not often that the stars align and something truly out of this world happens, so when it does it’s worth taking the time to learn about it and understand it. Plus, it prepares me for when the next annular eclipse hits America in October, so I can’t complain. |
