By: Inez Jamie Mexico has been known to be one of the most deadliest countries for journalists to be in. According to NPR News, “Mexico surpasses Syria as the most dangerous country for journalists.” In 2019 alone, 12 journalists were killed. In the first half of 2019, January through June, homicide rates in Mexico had an estimate of nearly 100 murders a day. According to a woman by the name of Sara Lidia Mendiola, who runs a legal advocacy for journalists, “An estimated 99% of all journalist homicide cases go unpunished.” Mendiola says that a new law protecting journalists would be a step in the right direction to help lower the number of journalist murders. However, theoretical laws were not enough to save Jorge Armenta. This year, another journalist was killed in an armed attack in northern Mexico, according to BBC News. Jorge Armenta is the third reporter to be killed in northern Mexico this year. Jorge Armenta was known as the director of the media outlet Medios Obson in Ciudad Obregon. BBC stated that he was “under government protection after receiving death threats”. The prosecutor's office that had been investigating this murder stated that the officers protecting Jorge were attacked as well. The first officer was killed, and the other was heavily wounded. According to BBC, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who had taken office in 2018, made a promise to decrease the absurd amount of murders occurring in the country. However, many activists claim that “measures taken by his government have so far been merely symbolic”.

By: Saira Canales On Monday, May 19, May Yin was just reunited with her biological parents. When he was just two years old he was abducted in a hotel in 1988. His father said that he and his wife came to the hotel to rest for a while. His father turned his back for a few minutes to get some water for his son. During that time, someone took May Yin. According to Time Magazine, he is now thirty two years old. Ever since he was taken, he and his wife have done everything they could to go out and find their son. The mother even quit her job to devote all of her time into finding her son. It was said that she passed out over 100,000 flyers throughout all of China. She’s been on multiple shows to explain that they wanted to find her missing son. One of the shows she’s been on was X Factor and from there they came up with over 300 leads and each one turned out to be a dead end. During this time she even joined groups such as “Baby Come Back Home” so she can help other mothers find their missing kids as well. Even though she wasn’t able to find her kid through this group, she was able to help others. She continues to work with them today. How did she find her son, May Yin? The police received an anonymous tip about a man who adopted a young man around the same time the baby had gone missing. When this news was heard, a DNA was taken out and it came back as positive that he was the missing boy. When the adoptee was asked questions, he just said a man was able to give them a child for $840, which made sense at the time, considering the fact that many kids around that time have been getting abducted and there was never any trace of the people who did this. When the family was reunited, there was an interview and the boy said that all he wanted to do at that point was just to spend time with his family and get to know where he was from. By: Brianna Quinonez The archeological world is full of surprises and unexpected discoveries, with mysteries waiting to be told to an audience. Finding new treasures ever gets old. In Santa Cruz, the southern province of Argentina, a new valuable from the prehistoric world was found— a 10 meter long dinosaur bone. (For those under the Imperial System, rather than the Metric system, 10 meters is about 33 feet.) According to the BBC, the archaeological team found a Megaraptor. “The new megaraptor is one of the last of its group, before dinosaurs became extinct.” That means that this animal bone was a part of a moving beast right towards the end of the age of the dinosaurs. The primeval animal had a strong set of legs with claws that could grow up to 35 cm, or 14 inches. With this type of body structure, the megaraptor was definitely on top of its food chain and took advantage of this when it came to preparing its meals. It's quite clear that this specific dinosaur was no match for the famed Tyrannosaurus Rex due to its speed and its long tail to help it keep balance during its runs. According to the Silicone Republic, “Vertebrae, ribs and part of what would be the chest and shoulder girdle of this specimen were recovered, appearing to show it to be a newly discovered species. It is also a more modern species of megaraptor, as previous discoveries were millions of years older.” With this in mind, many previously discovered versions of the megaraptor will surely be examined again to spot some key differences between the older species and the more modern one. With so much new development and technological advances in the world, it’s nice to see that the studies of the prehistoric world continue to fascinate all kinds of people, from museum-goers to archeologists in the making. |
