By: Lucas Drummond According to the New York Times, on Friday Judge Ruth Bader Ginsberg died at the age of 87, due to complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer, surrounded by family in her home in Washington, D.C. She was nominated by President Bill Clinton and served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court from 1993 until her death Friday. From 1973 to 1978, she presented six cases to the court, winning five of them with the goal in mind to persuade the Supreme Court to change the 14th amendment from guarantee of equal protection for racial discrimination but as well as sex discrimination. This wasn’t the first time Justice Ginsberg has had health issues as she had beaten colon cancer in 1999 and as well as early stage pancreatic cancer. To stay healthy she worked out with a personal trainer regularly who published a book about his clients exercise regime. She was a democratic powerhouse despite her fragile appearance and was one of the leading figures for women’s rights after facing first hand discrimination when she went to Harvard law, or after when she couldn’t land a job because of her gender. At one point in her career in 2014 she was the only female justice compared to the other 8 male justices beside her in the courtroom. One of her law students, Shana Knizhnik, came up with the nickname The Notorious R.B.G. which was a play on words on the name of the Notorious B.I.G. who was a famous Brooklyn born rapper.

By: Leslie Lopez Around the time of September 14th an ICE nurse has spoken up about what has been done regarding immigrant women. According to BBC News the nurse, Dawn Wooten worked in Georgia at the private Irwin County Detention Center. The center houses immigrants who’ve been detained by ICE. A federal complaint was filed against the center because of the lack of safety measures against the virus and medical neglect. In the complaint Dawn spoke about her concern for the hysterectomies being done to the women that are detained. A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing part or all of the uterus. Women went up to Ms. Wooten and told her that they didn't understand why they had to have the surgery performed. The center is also refusing to test detainees that show symptoms of COVID-19. At a press conference Ms. Wooten said that she would “be a target anytime” instead of being part of something that is “inhumane.” While speaking to the reporters Ms.Wooten said she was demoted after speaking out about the center conditions. On Monday there were statements released that ICE said they are taking the allegations seriously. That they are “committed to the safety and welfare of those in custody.” An ICE spokesman claims that they have been tracking the outbreak of COVID-19 regularly and following the protocols. Ms.Wooten said that a doctor removed the wrong ovary from a young detainee and that every person “he sees has a hysterectomy. A detainee part of Project South said that “it was like they’re experimenting with our bodies.” Project South is Georgia Detention Watch, Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, and South Georgia Immigrant Support Network that filed the complaint for the detained immigrants and Ms.Wooten.
On Tuesday Priyanka Bhatt, Project South’s lawyer, said that there have been issues about women's health at the facility going back many years. Azadeh Shahshahani, a human rights attorney for Project South, is going to investigate the allegations. A detainee described in a letter that the medical unit is “dirty and with animals like ants and insects, with only one bed, toilet, and sink.” By: Leslie Lopez

On August 23, 2020, Jacob was trying to break up a fight between two women when the Kenosha Police arrived at the scene. Jacob was walking to his car when the officer decided to follow him and then shoot him in the back. The viral video recorded by Raysean White, has been viewed over a million times. Ever since this incident young adults have been coming together to march for justice. There have been protests in Salt Lake, Philadelphia, Utah, and many more places. The picture at the very top is from Kenosha News and it had about 2,000 people marching for a change. Joe Biden visited Jacob’s family on Friday, September 4th. Biden agrees with everyone that the officer should face chargers from what he has done. According to the Chicago Tribune Biden met with Blake’s family for an hour in the airport then proceeded to go to Kenosha’s Grace Lutheran Church to meet with the community. Biden is all in for peaceful protesting but when it turns to looting that is no longer protesting. According to Bangor Daily News a protest in Portland got canceled due to the amount of threats they have received. It happened a day after the Portland police had a press conference and warned the protesters to “stand down.” The crowd plan was to create a blockade in front of the police station. Once news of the protest hit social media many people were provoked and threatened to use violence. Many people on social media have started rumors about Jacob’s past and claim that he is a criminal. On Friday, September 4th, 2020, Mr.Blake pleaded not guilty during a virtual court appearance on his hospital bed. According to Reuters Blake is accused of trespassing, third degree sexual assault, and disorderly conduct. The picture above (right) is from Reuters, Jacob is the one on the bottom right. His ex-girlfriend says that Blake broke into her house then sexually assaulted her and after that he proceeded to steal her truck and debit card. Blake’s lawyer told the judge that he did not have a criminal record in any state. The trial is set to begin on November 9th. Blake moved to Kenosha to have a fresh start but it definitely turned out different. |
